Meet my friend, Barry!

Jul 08 2021

Today, on the momentous occasion of National Blueberry Day, I wanted to introduce you to my friend Barry, the blueberry! One of my most preposterous pals, he makes our Berry oatmeal extra special, providing you with a quick breakfast for kids and an easy, healthy meal for family and friends (cuz he's an allergen-friendly fruit, to boot!). But there are even more cool things about Barry and other blueberries that we wanted to share.

Noatworthy Facts!

You may think being blue makes a blueberry feel a little sad sometimes, but that's not the case! In fact, being a blue color is rare -- and very special -- for fruits! The color comes from a pigment called anthocyanin, shared by eggplants, red cabbage and black rice, among others. So when Barry is feeling extra blue, he remembers he has friends who feel the same way too!

If you look closely at a whole blueberry, you can see the five points on its blossom make a star shape. So wherever Barry goes, he's always the star of his own show and brings that starpower to make oatmeal a fun breakfast. Basically, a celebrity.

You may already know this, but blueberries are superfoods for healthy eating. They are packed with so many vitamins that they can even help your body reduce oxidative stress (although maybe not enough to combat the unique stress brought on by a toddler-created-mess), lower LDL cholesterol and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Thank you, Barry!

Barry also is a bass singer, has the astrological sign of Cancer, never wears shoes and is the oldest of four mostly sweet, occasionally sour, brothers (Harry, Gary and Larry).

Hooray for Barry on this national day of celebrating the Blueberry!

Until next time, signing oat -- Oatis
